31 Days of Joy: Relax and Rest

“Let her sleep, for when she wakes, she will move mountains.”

Relax and rest.

Did you know that relaxation is a necessity? It is a Biblical principle that all creatures must rest. Without proper rest the human brain and body will break down. Daily we have so much going on in their lives that sometimes we have to remember to just take a moment of silence to relax our minds and bodies. Taking care of your body, your health, and your emotions is not selfish. Your body is a place where the Spirit of God lives, and because of that reason, God has given you the job of taking care of yourself for His sake. You are an instrument that He would like to use for His great purpose - but if you damage that instrument by running yourself into the ground until you are tired, sick, or emotionally exhausted, God cannot use you very effectively. The Bible certainly supports taking the time to care for yourself and your needs. Just like your body needs food and water, your greatest spiritual need is for Jesus Christ. So spend some time pouring out your heart to Him in prayer as you soak in the tub or worshiping Him as you take a long walk. Take your Bible and go to your favorite coffee shop and just spend a few hours reading and thinking about God’s Word. These times of rest are so important, not just to refresh yourself physically, but to also renew yourself spiritually.

Focus Scriptures:
Psalms 127:2
It is pointless that you get up early and stay up late, eating the bread of hard labor because God gives sleep to those He loves.

Exodus 20:8-11
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Exodus 33:14
My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden , and I will give you rest .

Joy in Action Today:
Set aside a specific time to rest. Choose how long you want it to be, set a timer, and relax. Request to not be disturbed, put away all electronics, and ease your mind of all distractions. Enjoy your time of peace.
